Chapter Seventeen

SYV

I’m hesitant to leave Caius behind the ice barrier at the top of the stairs, but Cillian insists the magic will fade when we leave. I place the chained, glowing gem at the ice block’s feet even though the guys tell me not to. Col told me to swap the gem for the box, so I will. He’d be pissed off if we didn’t keep the promise he made to Caius.

Morgan has the box inside his jacket, hand on top as we rush downstairs from the house and into a bright—and suspiciously clear of bad guys—world outside. We pause outside the door and I’m relieved to be away from the mingled stale smell and unknown powers inside.

“Are there many fae like Caius?” asks Cillian as he wipes dust from his face.

“Magic addicts? Yeah, normally young fae, but they’re addicted to magic that they buy from more powerful fae. Caius’s addiction is strange because it looks like he can take any magic as a fix from anywhere.”

Morgan looks back at the house and the deceptive neatness and order in the gardens. “I wonder if Caius has any other Sunde boxes, but doesn’t realise?”

Cillian begins to walk away. “I doubt it. If he tried one box and it didn’t work, Caius wouldn’t bother paying for any more.”

Morgan pulls the box out and smooths his fingers across the top, mouth parted and reverence in his expression. But his eyes are sad—this box isn’t his brother’s.

“Do you know who’s in there?” I ask quietly.

He appears not to hear me.

Until now, Morgan has kept the box close to him and neither me nor Cillian attempted to touch it. But I’m curious, and the longer Morgan keeps this to himself, the more my curiosity grows.

“Can I see?” I ask and hold my hand out.

His fingers tighten around the onyx metal until his knuckles whiten. “I don’t know.”

“This isn’t your brother,” I say, irritated by his doubt. “We’re all involved with the search. It’s only fair I get to take a look too.”

The closer I step to the item, the more I want to take hold. The box in the warehouse distracted me when I was mid-job as my fascination overrode common sense. That night, I should’ve grabbed the box and hightailed it out of the warehouse, not stopped to admire it.

“Please?” I ask.

Morgan’s wary eyes meet mine. Hesitantly, he hands me the Sunde box.

My system floods with peace, the kind I usually find at the end of a bottle, and I clutch the metal between my palms. I close my eyes and the sensation washes over me, wave after wave. Holding this box wipes away the remaining aches from yesterday’s injuries and takes away the fear that prickled my spine the whole time we’ve been out in the open and vulnerable to a sudden attack.

This box is mine.

“Syv?” I open my eyes to see a perturbed Morgan closer to me than before. “Can I have the box back now?”

“I’ll look after it.”

His eyes widen. “No. Let me take the box.
